AutoBandits.com: The story.
AutoBandits.com conceived its name from the “Bonnot Gang” (La Bande à Bonnot), infamously known for the invention of the “get-away” car and utilization of cutting-edge technologies (including automobiles) that weren’t even made available to the French police!
The Bonnot Gang operated in 1911 and 1912 and was branded as "les bandits en auto" and created a wave of panic across the nation as they used their mechanical and engineering skills to steal luxury automobiles. The gang had the honor of being the first to use an automobile to flee the scene of a crime, presaging by over twenty years the later methods of John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde.

The gang continued their automobile thefts and robberies, shooting two policemen in the process. Automobiles were not yet common so the gang usually stole still expensive cars from garages, not from the street.
The Bonnot Gang’s demise came on the evening of May 14th, where two surviving members were besieged in Paris by a force of 300 policemen and 800 soldiers. Both sides returned fire that was so intense, it lasted until 2:00am until finally one of the police officers blew the entire place up. One member of the Bonnot Gang was killed in the explosion while the final members continued to fire, despite their wounds. Outnumbered and out powered, the surviving members were finally captured, and ultimately sentenced to life in prison.
